Picture yourself going to the theatre to see a comedy and having the cost of your ticket be totally dependent on how many times you laugh. Welcome to Pay per Laugh.
Last year, the government of Spain massively raised the ticket tax for theater shows, which in turn made the tickets more expensive and scared people away.
To solve the problem, indie theatre company Teatreneu partnered with Barcelona’s Cyranos McCann to place screens with face-recognition technology behind every seat in the venue. This way, a person would pay only for the amount of times they laugh during the show, but never more than €24.
It’s a radical idea that made theatre an affordable experience for all parties involved, but it could also open up the path for new creative and original ideas with the tech.
